Research into similar bands and different music videos:

Research into similar bands and different music videos:

One influence I had for creating my pop music video was the work of Britney Spears.

Britney spears is a renowned artist within the pop genre and an example of a convention, form and style that she uses that I developed and was influenced by is a dramatic and elaborate presentation of the artist in an unrealistic scene whereby they address the viewer directly. This can be seen in her music video ‘Toxic’ where she appears in a sparkly catsuit, in full makeup and airbrushing in a white box room. This convention allows the artist to promote themselves in a daring and provocative way in order to be memorable and also innovative.

On average in Britney Spears’ videos there are 50 shots of which are mostly close ups of her face lip synching or mid shots of her body, which shows that she is promoting her music throw her self image. She often dances in her videos too. I used concept of having a dramatic unrealistic scene in my music video in the shots of Dani in which she is lying on a bed and I use a bird’s eye view shot of her dressed in a posh dress covered in roses and fairy lights. The flowers accentuate the sense of naturalism and organic essence within pop genre and juxtapose the heightened dramatisation surrounding and the electric fairy lights create a fairytale aesthetic, extra lighting and glamorise the visual. The bed links the scene to the rest of the video as Dani is having a day dream.

Another influence is the work of Taylor Swift.

Taylor Swift is a more recent artist to join the pop genre industry and an idea I have been influenced by from her is the use of a followable narrative of the artist portraying a love interest conflict. This can be seen in her music video ‘Teardrops on my guitar’ in which Taylor plays a girl longing to be with a guy and the video tracks her following him and carrying out a normal teenage life. The artist wears normal clothes to juxtapose the shots of her in a green ball gown. A shot of her together with her love interest in a library shows the artist is hopeful of their future together.  The mis-en-scene placement of bookcases connotes that their relationship however should be hidden. I have used this convention as I have narrative shots in my music video that are in black and white in which Dani hides behind a pillar to watch her love interest ‘Callum’. The pillar is a similar device to the bookcases.

Another artist I have researched is Vanessa Carlton.

Vanessa Carlton is an original artist who similar to Dani, writes, performs and produces her own music. A convention I have used from her is the artist playing their own instrument in their music video. In her music video ‘A thousand miles’ Vanessa Carlton plays a grand piano which soars through New York City. Her nails are painted which suggests that she is at home playing the piano. The use of instrument synchronisation is also something I will use. Carlton’s grand piano is elaborately embellishes which suggests that music is the most important thing. Having an artist play their own instrument in their music video promotes the artist as exceptionally talented and genuine as you feel closer to the artist. I have filmed shots of Dani in which she is playing the piano and lip synching shots. This demonstrates her vocal and musical talents, promoting all aspects of herself.
