Pre- Production Survey and survey results:
I carried out a pre-production survey prior to filming my music video. The idea was to get inspiration for further developments and receive criticism and responses to ideas that may need expansion and development. It was also undertaken to gather a sense of the audience’s favourite genres, ways of viewing music videos these days (Internet, MTV and other TV channels) and first exposure of my films synopsis. It has been important to carry out a pre-production survey in order to see what was the most popularly demanded genre and which conventions I must need to use in order to realistically place my pop music video within that genre.
I surveyed 40 people, 20 male and 20 female to give an equal gender ratio, the ages varied between 15 – 22.
I understand that as this was only a small scale survey it does not bear accuracy to the whole music industry and opinions of all 15-22 year olds.

From the results of the pre-production survey I found out that:
- The most popular genre of music video to watch was ‘Pop’, closely followed by ‘R’n’B’.
- The most popular music outlet was MTV
- 80% of people downloaded their music in favour of buying
- The conventions that people expected to see within a pop video matched the ones that I initially thought of: natural setting, lovers, story line, over the top scenes. This made me positive in the direction I was taking with my video
- Interestingly, the audience feedback proved that I had allocated the correct target audience as all participants whom filled out a survey were within the target audience and had at least one positive response and engaged with the music video.
- Some audience commented on the narrative story told throughout the music video and said that the characters and story were believable; many had their own interpretations as to whether it was all a dream or not, which was what I intended! I think the narrative makes the pop video accessible as it is ‘something that can be watched effortlessly’.
