Research into different music video outlets available on TV and internet:

In the 21st Century it has become increasingly easy to both promote and enjoy new and old talent. There are many music video outlets, such as, Myspace, YouTube, Facebook, Unsigned Artists, MTV and many other television music channels.

The invention and growth of the internet in the 1980’s have lead to the current media music video outlets available. The internet is also a public domain, which means that previously ‘banned’ videos such as “God save the Queen” by the Sex Pistols can now be seen in at least one place somewhere on the ‘net’.

Myspace

Myspace is a social networking site, with headquarters in Beverly Hills, California, and is owned by News Corporation, Digital Media. Myspace was created in 2003 and launched in America in 2004 and became the most popular networking site across the whole United States in that year. Fox Broadcasting became a joint partner of the company and in 2006 announced plans to launch a UK version of Myspace in a bid to "tap into the UK music scene". It is interesting that Myspace extended their network in order to create a larger plethora of music available. With the arrival of Facebook, Myspace has transcended its primal function into that of being an access to music and artists. Unsigned artists and signed alike can have a page whereby they promote their music, themselves and can sample their songs. Famous artists such as Lily Allen and Sean Kingston were both founded through Myspace. Fox Broadcasting created their own record label ‘Myspace Records’ in order to sign new and young talent.

Myspace pages a key element of any upcoming artist’s futures as many agents and record labels search the most popular and likewise, unheard of artisits.

YouTube

YouTube is a video sharing website, created in 2005. Currently it is the third most viewed website behind Google and Facebook. Anyone may publish a video, which is why many young people are uploading footage of themselves singing in order to be discovered by famous artists. For example Justin Bieber was discovered by the artist Usher on the website through his posted videos. Youtube now contains Billions of videos and arguably the novelty of ‘finding’ an artist is fading as thousands of people are attempting it.

A step a may take after creating my pop video if I were to take it further would be to leak a small section, or perhaps create a trailer of my music video and upload it to YouTube to create a specific ‘buzz’ about the artist.

Facebook

Facebook is the world’s most popular and prominent social networking site, created in 2004 by college student Mark Zuckerberg. Unlike Myspace, Facebook does not have uploading features for soundtracks, but music videos may be posted and shared alongside digi-pack reminiscent promotions. Facebook is a key music outlet as it is the most popular social networking site, which means that the majority of people will be on it.

Facebook will be a definite consideration for advertising my pop video as it is accessible and the most popular social networking site of my target audience; this will help ‘word of mouth’ advertising.

MTV

“My Television”, a worldwide phenomenon, is the first music channel for television which launched on August 1st 1981. The original concept for MTV was to play music videos guided by on air hosts called VJs. MTV arguably had the biggest impact on the music industry over any other event, as it captured audiences worldwide and the concept of video-based music outlets was introduced. The first music video to be aired on MTV was ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’ by The Buggles, however the first images displayed were of the Apollo moon landing with the American flag edited to the MTV symbol. In my opinion it is a replica of how MTV has become a global domination, much like the American flag on the moon.

In the 1980’s the television screen would go blank between each music video as the VJ changed the tapes; the viewers both accepted and were excited by this, which is ironic considering the current 21st Century’s need for everything instantaneously.

MTV would be an ideal place for my music video to be displayed.
